...what we did for MLK Day! (Included in the Upcoming Black History Unit)

With this being my first year since student teaching as a KG teacher, I felt like conducting an experiement. I asked my students who the man on the calendar was and why he was there ...and none of them knew.  After I explained that he was not Barack Obama or Barack Obama's brother LOL...I told them they would get to meet him soon.

So...I led them in a MLK, Jr. Mini-Inquiry Project. I decided that I wasn't going to lecture or read a book up front. I wanted to see if they could get the gist through their own research.

When the students came in, the classroom was FULL of MLK books. The mission was to partner up and read the words and pictures and inquire as much as they could about this man.

They had around ten minutes to research and then they had to come back to the carpet with one page that they decided was intriguing.
Then, they shared what they found and we charted the responses. When they were dying to know why this man died, preached, walked, etc...I finally read aloud a book and we clarified and verified their assumptions on Dr. King's life. I loved it and I was so impressed at how much they figured out on their own! It helped me to remember to give these little minds more credit than I do...they can do so much!  Go little thinkers!!

Then we learned a cute little poem called "Let Freedom Ring" and we made these super easy Freedom bells and chanted that poem until freedom literally did ring!!!  Both the poem and the bell template/directions are included in my Black History Unit that is being edited and taught.
(I don't sell it unless I teach it and I've got a few days left!)

So yeah, I was going to post a lot more but...I got super sleepy. I'll get back to it tomorrow after I teach school and then teach zumba.

*Literally was so tired that I fell asleep w/o even posting this! =)

Spring Break?...Hello?....Please?

  1. LOL, you had me cracking up with the Obama comment. I am proud to say that all my kids can recognize Obama, but a little sad that this years, new crop didn't know Dr. MLK. Well, they do now.
